Since MRI already plays a key role in screening patients with chronic liver disease for liver cancer, it also holds promise as a noninvasive tool for assessing the severity of chronic liver disease and early detection of portal hypertension. At the Translational Imaging Center, several innovative MR techniques are currently being investigated as potential noninvasive tools for characterization of patients with chronic liver disease, including T1 mapping, intravoxel incoherent motion imaging, MR elastography, and automated volumetric analysis enabled by artificial intelligence. Together, these innovations aim to improve how chronic liver disease is monitored and to help identify patients at risk of developing more severe complications from portal hypertension.
