      Balanced Steady State Free Precession:

Theory and Applications from Low to High-Field

      Prof. Dr. phil. Oliver Bieri

      Department of Biomedical Engineering &

      Radiologische Physik Departement Radiologie

      University of Basel Hospital

      Basel, Switzerland

      · CPD

Balanced steady state free precession (bSSFP) was first introduced within the context of NMR in the late 1950ies (Carr HY, Phys Rev 1958;112:1693) and Oppelt was the first to propose the technique in 1986 for MRI (Oppelt et al, Electromedia 1986;54:15). MRI with bSSFP, however, became only successful with the introduction of very fast and precise gradient systems about two decades ago within the context of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) (e.g., Barkhausen et al, Radiology 2001;219:264). Nowadays, bSSFP is considered the “workhorse” for CMR, but other applications are emerging; especially for low-field MRI systems.

The theory of bSSFP will be revisited with a special attention on its representation in the Fourier space. This will help us to understand its signal properties in the transient and in the steady state to discuss a selection of novel bSSFP-based clinical applications from low-to-high field.

The lecture will be held in sitem-insel (Room O2.211), Freiburgstr. 3, Bern followed by an Apéro and discussion and
